Octal

This high-performance engineering team build more than hardware-software systems. They build ambition.

Octal is a New Zealand-based team engineering high-performance hardware-software systems. Named after the base-8 numeral system—where each digit represents three binary bits, standing for the three founding partners—they give clients an unfair technical advantage by eliminating systemic inefficiencies. Relying purely on word-of-mouth had brought steady growth, but the business had hit an exposure ceiling. They commissioned Semper Semper to craft a brand identity and digital experience that would articulate their deep technical expertise, set them apart from generic tech competitors, and reach "technologically underserved" clients. Our strategic insight revealed that beyond physical assembly and line code, Octal is ultimately in the business of building client ambitions.

We anchored the visual identity on the core platform ‘From first principles’. Stripping away arbitrary aesthetic choices, the entire visual system begins with a foundational 8-pixel grid. Multiples and divisions of eight govern the typography, layouts, and proportions across digital and print media, resulting in a strictly calibrated brand architecture. The primary mark—a tri-wing arrow inside an outer circle—references electronic hardware components while symbolising problem-solving and the three founders. This is paired with an unexpected Primary Yellow and Machine Grey palette, mono typography via Simplon Mono, and structured statement typographic stacks.

To visually express the depth of integrated hardware-software systems, we engineered a series of vector pattern blocks on the base-8 grid. Overlapping vertical, horizontal, and diagonal lines at varying scale resolutions mirror structural layers and code granularity, functioning as both functional graphic elements and standalone decorative artworks. This logic extends seamlessly into Octal’s digital platform through modular layouts, custom vector-and-8-bit iconography, and subtle nods to retro computing, such as terminal cursors. Human-centric art direction balances these hard edges, placing the people and ambitions behind the technology squarely at the centre.

Built from a foundational 8-pixel grid, the brand system combines a tri-wing mark and mono typography into a mathematically calibrated visual identity.

Interlocking base-8 line patterns mirror system granularity and code architecture, translating complex engineering logic into striking generative artworks.

The digital-first platform pairs classic computing cues and modular layouts with sharp, human-centric storytelling to showcase the ambition behind the tech.
